Southern California has just experienced the longest consecutive period of hot weather this year. As the summer vacation draws to a close the dog days of summer are reluctant to leave. The latest addition of thunderstorms to the heat and draught make for a thoroughly unpleasant, almost tropical climate with hightened risks of wildfires. At my house we had been braving the heat without air conditioning for the longest time, as the overall rise in the cost of living severely impacted our budget for the pleasant, but not necessarily vital amenities in life.
During the last week however, air conditioning became more of a nesessity to remain functional and healthy. The anticipated spike in our energy bill is already causing an uneasy feeling in my gut.
Many electric utility companies are offering varied type of discount on your bill if you participate in some form of energy conservation program. In our nook of the woods in comes in the form of a remote control unit which enables the electric company to restrict your use of energy draining air conditioning.
With abundant solar energy available at least in this region it's a shame that the use of affordable alternative energy for the majority of homeowners is still just a dream.
Huge Plasma TVs and GPS satellite navigation have become common and affordable household items for many citizen in a relatively short period of time. Why can't the same be true for solar panels or other alternative energy generating technology, when these seem to be of far greater importance for the welfare and survival of current and entire future generations?
