In any housing market it is fairly likely that the home you choose to buy is not going to be perfectly ideal for your needs; buying a house is always about balancing what you want with what kinds of homes are actually on the market and available to you. One of the ways that home buyers often feel that a home doesn’t fulfill their needs is in the amount of privacy that they have in their yard. There are some easy ways to create privacy in your new yard however: plants and constructed structures are generally the best options.

Plants can be an easy way to create privacy in your yard; there are lots of kinds of tree and bushes that make for good privacy screening and look pretty while they do it. Be aware that plants can be a little pricey, depending on what kinds you’re looking at planting in your yard.  They do require care; some plants require a lot of taking care of while some just need regular watering.  Make sure that you know what kind of maintenance a particular tree or shrub is going to require so that you know what sort of time investment you’re making.

It’s also good to keep in mind the difference between how your yard is going to look in the summer to how it will look in the fall and winter when many trees will lose their leaves.  Creating a balance of evergreen and deciduous trees can give you a nice balance whereby you give up some of your privacy in exchange for more light in the dim winter months.

If you don’t want to take care of a yard full of living plants, some kind of garden construction might be a better option for you to create privacy in your yard.  While a fence is always a great start because it physically keeps neighborhood children and dogs out of your yard, there are other options as well. Consider using a tall lattice with plants growing on it as a living screen along the edge of a patio; this makes for a nice mix of living greenery and a screen that will provide privacy even if your plants die back in the fall.  Another nice option is a gazebo where you can sit in the garden; gazebos are often round or octagonal covered areas with seating inside that would provide you with shade or rain cover, giving you an outside living area in your yard.

Whichever option you choose, it’s important to remember that creating privacy in your new yard should take some time to research and plan out so that you end up with a yard that complements your home and your lifestyle. Remember also to check with your municipal bylaws if you’re planning on doing any building in your yard.
